Bootlegs – Dio

Today marks the fifth anniversary of Ronnie James Dio’s passing. What a tremendous loss to the metal community. But let’s celebrate his legacy, given that it is Super Group Week here on the site, we wanted to point out how Ronnie pretty much always incorporated musicians from known bands into his band. In essence every lineup of the band Dio was a super group.

Ronnie James Dio – Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Elf
Vinny Appice – Black Sabbath, Axis
Jimmy Bain – Rainbow
Vivian Campbell – Sweat Savage
Claude Schnell – Rough Cutt

When Vivian Campbell was fired, in came Craig Goldie from Giuffria

The next lineup switch was more drastic, joining Ronnie for Lock Up The Wolves was 17 year old unknown Rowan Robertson on guitar. Along with the following musicians:

Simon Wright – AC/DC
Jens Johansson – Yngwie Malmsteen
Teddy Cook – Later joined Great White

After the recording and touring behind what is my all-time favorite Black Sabbath album Dehuminzer, Dio reformed his band. Vinny Appice returns to the fold, and includes the following musicians:

Jeff Pilson – Dokken
Tracy G – World War III

His last few albums would all see the return of Craig Goldie on guitar, except for Killing The Dragon which would feature former Lion guitarist Doug Aldrich. Jeff Pilson and Jimmy Bain would swap bass duties, while Rudy Sarzo would be his last official bass player, never playing on a studio album. Simon Wright and Keyboardist Scott Warren would appear on every album after Tracy G’s tenure in the band.

Although I was lucky enough to see one of the last performances by the band Dio, the last video in this post will feature the lineup with Doug Aldridge on guitar.

Long Live Ronnie James Dio, as a bonus, I give you Rainbow with Ronnie, Bob Daisley, Cozy Powell, Jon Lord and of course Ritchie Blackmore. Talk about super group!
