Times Of Grace - Songs Of Loss And Separation

THE OFFSPRING ARE BACK AFTER A DECADE

For a while now we had been hearing that Times Of Grace would be putting out a second album. I know a lot of fans of Killswitch Engage were hoping the first album by Times Of Grace, and the newer Killswitch album with Jesse Leach would sound more like his original run with the band. I’ve had quite a few people tell me that they were disappointed with the re-pairing of Adam Dutkiewicz and Leach. Perhaps because I am not a die-hard, I have always given them the benefit of the doubt. I have enjoyed music off of each of their releases, both Times Of Grace and Killswitch Engage.

Songs Of Loss And Separation is no different. The album is a mix of a lot of influences you’ve heard over the years. From the Zakk Wylde-like pinch harmonics Adam D has always used. To the Chris Cornell-esque vocals, Leach has consistently tried to emulate. Essentially great 90s hard rock and metal that came right before Killswitch exploded on the scene. Take that and mix it with Adam’s huge riffs, to his prog-like interludes, and just quiet subtleness where needed.

While people questioned, why another Times Of Grace album? After all, they’re both in Killswitch Engage now? Well, this album truly takes them in other directions you aren’t used to hearing from them. It goes places they simply can’t go with their day job. Country, prog, radio rock, etc. Killswitch die-hards would go apeshit if some of these tracks made their way onto one of their albums. But because it’s a Times Of Grace album, well “it’s a side project”, “wow, look at all of this cool experimentation”, instead of “WTF did they do!”

If you liked the first Times Of Grace album, this shows that they’re growing as artists. If you’re deadset on Jesse Leach and Adam D only putting out music like Alive Or Just Breathing, then continue on your way. There is nothing for you to see here for you.

What they’ve done here is just put out an album with no boundaries. No blueprint to follow outside of the fact that it’s rock-based music. If you can go in with an open mind, check the album out. I’m sure you’ll find something you enjoy off of it.

Here are Times Of Grace with "Mend You" off of their new album Songs of Loss and Separation.
