THE LUCID DROP THEIR SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM
I was lucky enough to have Drew Fortier send me “Maggot Wind” the first track off of the album earlier this year. The song instantly caught me by surprise, it sounded like a cool band on paper. But could they pull it off?
The instantly sounded like a mix between Stone Temple Pilots and Badlands to me. Vinnie Dombroski sounded like Ray Gillen in spots, and Scott Weiland in others. Vinnie is best known for fronting Sponge. On The Lucid, Vinnie is a chameleon, he sounds like well Vinnie Dombroski. But he also channels many other influences. Aside from Weilan and Ray Gillen, Layne Stayley also comes to mind.
The band is rounded out by bassist David Ellefson, and drummer Mike Heller who is best known for his work in Fear Factory and Raven. Ellefson seems to be the last piece of the puzzle here.
The album sounds like an amped-up mix between 90s alternative rock, and straight-up hard rock. Filled with angst, hunger, and swagger.
The Lucid sounds sonically great, and the album is solid top to bottom.
