New Releases: March 18, 2022 – Stabbing Westward

Stabbing Westward Chasing Ghosts

STABBING WESTWARD IS BACK AFTER MORE THAN TWO DECADES

It really bummed me out that Stabbing Westward fell apart after their 2001 self-titled album. Although I thought that album was good, Wither Blister Burn & Peel, and especially Darkest Days were two albums that immediately made an impact on my listening habits. The latter in my opinion is a classic and is an album that I still play often. It is among my favorite albums of all time.

Stabbing Westward offered something different from all of the other industrial bands that were stuck trying to imitate Nine In Nails and Ministry. Christopher Hall has always had a very distinct voice, which helped the band stand out from the pack. Couple that with the band always having interesting music that, would just rent space in my ears for months at a time. They were more than the standard run-of-the-mill industrial band being added to every soundtrack in the 90s.

As much as I enjoyed The Dreaming, Hall’s band after Stabbing Westward, there was always something missing. Maybe Walter Flakus or perhaps Andy Kubiszewski? The material was good, but it was just missing that it factor that made Wither Blister Burn & Peel, and Darkest Days special albums.

I was thrilled to hear the band was going to be releasing new material. It was supposed to be a series of EPs. But they only ended up releasing two before the pandemic happened. Some of the songs off of those EPs are reworked and appear on Stabbing Ghosts.

I’m pleased to say that this is the album that should have followed up Darkest Days. It is a continuation of what the band did on that album and its predecessor. It is what most fans of the band had been expecting, not what eventually appeared on their self-titled album.

The band is currently made up of Stabbing Westward cornerstones Christopher Hall, and Walter Flakus. Joining them are Carlton Bost who has played with The Dreaming, Berlin, and Orgy, and former Orgy drummer Boby Amaro.

Being a sucker for their previous work, I have been able to digest this close to an hour’s worth of music fairly easily.

If you like the band’s previous output, you need to check this album out. If you’ve only heard about them, or are looking for something a little different this week, give the album a spin.

Here is Stabbing Westward with the track "Damaged Goods" off of their latest album Stabbing Ghosts.
