Megadeth - The Sick The Dying And The Dead

MEGADEATH WITH A MEGARETURN

I have been a Megadeth fan since my neighbor brought home Peace Sell…But Who’s Buying? I’ve mentioned this plenty on the podcast, when others preached about Metallica and Slayer, I was all about Megadeth and Anthrax. The dope teen that felt that way, would later realize that you could like all four.

But Megadeth was always different, the sound, the musicianship, the lyrics, it all spoke to me. So much of it still speaks to me. So much so, that I’ve seen the band live more than any other band.

Given the legacy, and if you’ve been following the band, you know that they’ve had ups and downs along the way. I always try to find the good in everything, even though there are things on Super Collider that I like. I don’t feel the same about Risk.

So where does The Sick The Dying…And The Dead stack up in comparison to the rest of the band’s catalog?

This is album number sixteen, their first since 2016’s Dystopia.

Mainman Dave Mustaine and Chris Rakestraw produced the album.

The band is currently on Tradecraft/Universal.

The band was formed back in 1983 by Dave Mustaine and David Ellefson.

The Sick The Dying…And The Dead is a very strong album. Outside of knowing that the same band released Super Collider and Risk, you wouldn’t know it was them. Obviously, if you know, you know. But, if you’re new to the band, and don’t recognize main man Dave Mustaine’s signature voice, it wouldn’t be easy to make the connection, just because the music at times is vastly different.

To me, this album is a continuation of what they did with Dystopia. It will please the majority of the fan base. On The Sick, The Dying…And The Dead, Dave, and company are delivering their brand of fast thrashy music that most want from the band. This is the second album with Kiko Loureiro on guitars. It is the first with Dirk Verbeuren on drums.

With this said, the last album I would consider great by the band is United Abominations. To me, that album is filled with classic after classic. I’m not saying The Sick, The Dying…And The Dead isn’t good. It just doesn’t have that one track that really jumps out at you and says, I need to listen to this again. And I’m not saying “where’s “Re-Return to the Hanger”, or “Wake Up Dead Again.” I’m saying the first six tracks off of United Abominations, were instant classics. Each of those songs stands out to me. To the point that when I saw them on that tour, I wondered why they didn’t play songs more off of the album. I’ve always wondered what made that album stand out to me over everything that’s come out since.

Regardless of what I say about The Sick, The Dying…And The Dead, die-hards are still going to check this album out. The album is an upgrade over Dystopia. Kiko and Dirk had a hand at composing tracks on the album, especially the former. I am guessing that a few things could have happened. Dave was probably more comfortable working with Kiko, given that on Dystopia he only co-wrote three songs. On The Sick, The Dying…And The Dead, Kiko was involved in co-writing eight songs. There was also a ton of downtime due to the Pandemic. It took them two years, given they started recording the album in 2019. Dystopia took them four months to record.

I still recommend that you check out Megadeth’s The Sick, The Dying…And The Dead and decide for yourself.
